How many Notes can share a circuit?

A standard 15 A, 120 V circuit can power up to 8 Notes. The numbers for other circuits and regions are below.

North America (120 V and 208 V)

These apply to Notes with the B SKU cord (NEMA 5-15P).

Circuit

Up to

15 A / 120 V

8 Notes

20 A / 120 V

10 Notes

30 A / 120 V

16 Notes

20 A / 208 V

18 Notes

30 A / 208 V

27 Notes

A 208 V circuit needs a C5 to NEMA 6-15P or 6-20P cord and a matching receptacle. Neither is included. These figures don't apply to 100 V supplies, such as in Japan.

220–240 V regions

These apply to Notes with EG SKU cords (Type E/F and Type G) or the I SKU cord (Type I).

32 A radial (UK)

31 Notes

In the UK, use a dedicated radial circuit with 4 mm² cable for 32 A under BS 7671. Ring final circuits aren't a good fit for an array's concentrated load.

How much power does a Note use?

Power

Current at 120 V

Current at 220–240 V

Maximum (rated)

180 W

1.5 A

0.8 A

While changing a message

about 72 W

about 0.6 A

about 0.3 A

While its Bits are flipping, a Note draws about what a small TV does. Once the message settles, the draw drops well below that.

Good to know

  • One Note on its own doesn't need a dedicated circuit. It can share an outlet with a lamp or a TV.
  • For an array, put every Note's outlet on one shared, dedicated circuit. It keeps the load predictable and the breaker easy to find.
  • All electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician following local codes.

For your electrician

  • The 120 V limits use each Note's rated current with the NEC Article 210 80% continuous-load limit. They work for code compliance and permit calculations.
  • The 220–240 V limits use rated current with an 80% margin at 220 V, the low end of the range. They're conservative at 230 and 240 V. Circuit design and derating follow IEC 60364 and national rules such as BS 7671, VDE 0100, NF C 15-100, GB 50054 and AS/NZS 3000.
  • Each Note has an internal switch-mode power supply. On shared circuits, plan for cumulative inrush current and leakage current, including GFCI, AFCI and RCD compatibility.
  • A PSU datasheet is available on request. Open a ticket to ask for one.
  • Vestaboard doesn't supply or endorse third-party power distribution equipment.
